CS American and World History: 1823-Present

 Week 1- Aug. 13-15: Introductions, overview, expectations, grading system, textbook survey, begin review of Summer Reading. Discuss a philosophy of history and why history is important.

Week 2- Aug. 18-22: Monday complete review of Summer Reading; Tuesday TEST on Summer Reading; Read chapter 13 in Bailey, pp. 161 - 168 in preparation for Wednesday's class; Read pages 169 - 179. Discussion and handouts on all pages. For Monday's class, read chapter 14 "Forging the National Economy; 1790-1860," pp. 181 - 188.

Week 3- Aug. 25-29: Review pages 181-188. Handouts and discussion; clarification. For Tuesday's class read pages 189-199. Discussion and handouts. Wednesday: TEST on chapters 13-14. For Friday's class read chapter 15, pp 200-207. Handouts and discussion. Possible computer lab research. Read pp. 208-217 for Tuesday's class.

Week 4 - Sept. 2-5: Tuesday, work on 3 x 5 cards (personalities of the era) sing computers. For Wednesday read chapter 16 "The South and the Slavery Controversy; 1793-1860," pp. 218 - 224. Discussion of slavery and its impact. For Friday read pp. 225-229." Discussion and review.

Week 5 - Sept. 8 - 12: TEST on chapters 15-16; Read for Tuesday's class chapter 17, "Manifest Destiny and Its Legacy, 1841 - 1848," pp. 230 - 236. Handouts and discussion. Read for Wednesday's class pp. 237 - 241.  Read chapter 18, "Renewing the Sectional Struggle, 1848 - 1854," pp. 242 - 248 for Friday. Handouts and discussion. For Monday finish the chapter.

Week 6 - Sept. 15 - 19: Monday discussion, questions, and handouts on the sectional struggle. TEST on chapters 17 - 18 on Tuesday; For Wednesday read chapter 19, "drifting Toward Disunion 1854 - 1861," pp. 254 - 259. Finish chapter 19 for Friday's class. For Monday read chapter 20, "Girding for War: The North and the South, 1861-1865," pp. 267 - 271.

Week 7 - Sept. 22 - 26: Discussion and handouts for pages 267-271. Read pages 271-276. Handouts and discussion during Tuesday's class. Film GODS AND GENERALS. TEST on Wednesday, chapters 19-20. Read chapter 21, "The Furnace of Civil War, 1861 - 1865," pp. 277-283. Discussion on Friday. Handouts. Finish chapter 21 for Monday.

Week 8 - Sept. 29 - Oct. 2: Finish Civil War on Monday; TEST on Tuesday. Read all of chapter 22 "The Ordeal of Reconstruction, 1865 -1877," pp. 293-305. Wednesday and Friday: Discussion and clarification of RECONSTRUCTION.

Week 9 - Oct 6 - 9: REVIEW and nine weeks' test. Catch up and catch your breath. Library research in computer lab. FALL BREAK!!! Yea!!

Week 10 - Oct. 14 -17: INTRO the GILDED AGE, read for Tuesday's class Chapter 23, "Political Paralysis in the Gilded Age, 1869 - 1896," pp. 308 - 315. Discussion and handouts. For Wednesday finish chapter 23, pp. 315 - 323
