Fencing at DBCS is a competitive but non-TSSAA sport open to boys and girls of all grades.
The DBCS Fencing Team traveled to
Memphis
on April 27 – 28 to compete in the second annual Tennessee High School Fencing Championship. The DBCS team finished in second place, behind the
Baylor
School
and ahead of Christian Brothers and MUS.
Each school mustered a team of six fencers, and each team member fenced every member of every opposing team, making a total of 108 bouts per school.
Baylor
School
, whose fencing program was established in 1976 by DBCS coach John McBride, dominated the competition, winning 104 of 108 bouts. DBCS placed second with 53 victories, followed by Christian Brothers with 40 wins and Memphis University School (MUS) with 17.
Last year marked the beginning of what the organizers hope will grow into a permanent conference or league of
Tennessee
secondary schools with fencing programs. The 2006 championship included only three schools – Baylor, DBCS, and Christian Brothers – and the 2008 season is anticipated to include five or six schools.

FENCING AT
DAVID
BRAINERD
CHRISTIAN
SCHOOL
Fencing is an individual and team sport open to boys and girls from grades 6 through 12. At the present time we do only one weapon, foil. DBCS is a registered club with the United States Fencing Association (USFA). We compete in a variety of age-group and open events under the auspices of the Tennessee Division of the USFA. We also fence other high schools including Baylor, the Christian Brothers School of Memphis, the
Memphis
University
School
, and the Peachtree Ridge High School of Atlanta.
The DBCS fencing program is open to non-DBCS fencers; there is a $300 one-time tuition fee and $20 monthly dues for non-DBCS students.
Fencers are expected to join the USFA (required to compete in their tournaments); a year’s youth membership is $50.
Fencers provide their own equipment: beginners will need a mask and jacket and glove and dry foil, for about $160. In order to compete in our (electric) tournaments an additional $150 will be needed for electric foils and bodycords and lame (metallic vest).
The fencing program runs throughout the year for those who wish to participate so. However, many students participate in other sports during some seasons, and do fencing only part of the year. Because it is an individual sport, students may tailor their participation to their other commitments.
