Laura Cottrell, comes to David Brainerd from Baylor School where she was Head Varsity Girls Coach and summer programs assistant for the last 3 years. While at Baylor, the Lady Red Raiders won three straight regular season region championships only losing two region games in three years. In 2002 the Lady Raiders advanced to the state tournament while grabbing the Region Tournament Title on the way. Cottrell was named Region Coach Of The Year all three seasons at Baylor.
Before taking the position at Baylor, Cottrell came to Chattanooga as an assistant coach for Wes Moore and the Lady Mocs of UTC. During her three years at UTC, the Lady Mocs won their fist Southern Conference title in nine years en route to earning an invitation to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. That year UTC hosted the WNIT’s 1st and 2nd rounds by beating Alabama and then falling to Georgia Tech in the second round. In 2001 UTC won the Southern Conference Regular Season and Tournament earning the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Cottrell played college basketball for four years at Clemson University in Clemson, SC. During her career she compiled 1,108 points becoming the 15th player in Clemson women’s basketball history to reach the 1,000 point plateau in a career.
Cottrell became only the fifth player in Clemson history too reach the 1,000 point, 800 rebound club with a total of 808 rebounds.
Cottrell is fifth on the Clemson career list for 3-pointers and 13th for most points scored. She earned numerous accolades, including first-team All-Atlantic Cost Conference Tournament (1996 and 1997), 1996 ACC Tournament MVP and 1996-97 Boise State Tournament MVP. She lead Clemson to its first ever ACC basketball championship in 1996 where she was named MVP.
